journal #4: “Attending”

My first annotation in Superman and Me was on the section about the author training himself to read. Alexie said ” I can remember picking up my fathers books before I could read. The words were foreign but i still remember the exact moment when i first understood” I highlighted and wrote on the side bar. “He was trying even before he knew he could”  I relate to this and highlighted it because you have to put hours into your task if you ever want to succeed. “in all my years at the reservation school system i was never taught how to write poetry, short stories or novels.” I annotated and talked about how i thought this connected to the last reading in habits of the creative mind. No one is taught how to write different styles of writing. You must learn and be willing to learn.

“I rechecked the look in the guidance councilors eyes and said I would be delighted to interview for the job.” I annotated right here because you have to take chances in writing and you can’t take chances if you won’t try. Everything from writing and life comes from not if I can but when i will. “when you write a story you’re telling yourself the story” This made a big impact on me because in high school i would just turn in the first draft of something and not revise anything. I am going to try and turn over a new leaf and become a better writer by just trying.
