Draft One:Discourse vs Literacy Narratives

Literacy narratives and Discourses directly correlate to identity or your discourse in gee terms. The influences from you’re writing experiences can shape you as a person. Three essays were used to write this. “Mentee to mentor”, “literacy narrative”, and “Parental Advisory”. Each tell a story from a different point of view that easily show how one’s discourse can be correlated to the experiences in the literacy narrative. The experiences in the narratives aren’t always just about one’s literacy experiences but the experiences around the literacy.

In the story of “Mentee to mentor” the story is about how this person was taught to read and write by their grandparents because his parents couldn’t always be around, and when his younger sibling was being taught he ended up stepping up and becoming his mentor. This is not only about the process of reading and writing. This is someone’s entire life, and this is how it relates to discourse. Growing up having parents that are not always around for you can really form who you are. First it makes you extremely independent, but it also can have negative effects. Not having your parents can be very confusing especially at a young age like that. I personally had parents who could be around and it definitely showed me that they actually cared and let me make and grow a great bond with them.

The second story “literacy narrative” the title does it no  justice. This was about a young person who was praised constantly as a child almost giving them a high ego. This can also have positive and negative effects on the child as well. A person with over praising parents can grow up to think that anything they do is always right. This is good but no one does everything right. Having a high ego is something that no one wants. The positive side of this is definitely having high confidence. This will allow someone to try anything without hesitation. My parents always let me know when something I did well was good, but they also knew when to let me know when something was not up to par.

The third story was about someone who’s parents constantly would praise them also. This story had a different ending. The parents tried helping their kid anyway possible instead of letting them figure it out for themselves. This could stunt the kid from ever figuring out situations on their own, and when they get to college they could be completely screwed because there is no one here to tell them what to do and how to do it. When I was growing up I was taught to be independent at a young age which I personally felt was beneficial to me getting to college because I already had been doing all the things I do for myself now at home.

The discourse you hold and your literacy narratives go hand in hand. The stuff written in the papers is not just your literacy background it is everything else. Like who you are what you are, and who you will become.
