Journal #1 2018 fellowship

In the strategies that I read over the two chapters the ones that stood out to me were reading the paper aloud for one. This will allow the writer to here what they have written and will allow me to pick up on some flow or sentence error. This will also teach the writer a valuable self skill and that is to always read your paper aloud to hear for common mistakes that reading silently won’t allow you to pick up on.

higher order concerns first. This is a step that I found to be helpful when I was being tutored first the tutor points out the problems and then shows you the big picture that allows the writer to see what has to be done first. This will help especially first year students too do this because once they fix the large concerns first like a concrete thesis or something that sets up your paper the little parts of the paper like grammar and spelling do not seem so drastic to them.

I also liked the conversation instead of teaching. To me especially being not much older then the kids I will be tutoring it will be valuable to have a conversation with them telling them why I am confused and what they need to fix rather than me just handing them a list and them having to figure it out on there own. Having a conversation with them will also let me become not so much of an authority figure but someone who is trying to help move there paper to where it should be.

The specific writing challenges that these could help me overcome would be from first meeting a student that is where the conversation and the reading aloud will come in because with both of those I will be able to hear them talk and with that the ice is already broken. The second is the higher order concerns and that is for the people who don’t even really have a full paper and the draft is due tomorrow type of people. That will at least try to destress the situation enough where they can sit down and write there paper.

Out of all the things I read in these chapters the stuff I will be taking into my tutoring sessions will definitely be ice breaking because becoming to know the person you are about to tutor is important. The second thing is the triage or the higher order things first. I will take this especially because procrastination is a huge problem for me. This will help the students that have the same problem as me.
